Digital Marketing Library Space

Welcome to the Future!

Yes, the digital marketing students will have a place to call home soon! The need and demand for growth lead to the planning of an innovative workspace for students to combine their interests/talents towards real-world skills in digital marketing. This web page will highlight the design, resources, and educational tools that will make up the Digital Arts Studio within the library media center at Chaminade High School.

Space is always a challenge for those wanting to learn. For the digital marketing students, having a dedicated studio space was impossible in an already crowded school space. The librarian saw an opportunity to create a space for those students and decided it was time to build them an educational home.

This digital marketing studio is a class driven space where students will learn to video, photograph, and explore ways to build digital resources.

They will engage with professional gear such as:

-DSLR Cameras

-Various recording devices (ZOOM Q2N, Sony Cameras, Go pros)

-Tripods and various stands

-Lighting equipment

-Light boxes as well as green/white screen

-Adobe products such as Premier and Photoshop

While in this space, there will be educational material created for each piece to ensure usability without confusion.

Teaching material?

In order to create the optimal learning space, a smart board touch screen will be located near the computer desk space. On this board there will be icons for each piece of equipment with written directions as well as video links on best practices for using each piece.

As an example, this video was done by the librarian explaining best practices for the ZOOM Q2N.

The advantage of using YouTube to host these videos is that closed captioning is automated and allows the librarian to update remotely without having to physically change anything within the space. This also means that if students are unable to use the space, they will also have access to the training materials digitally.

Flexibility to build skills from the cellphone to a large soundstage, the goal is to set them up for success, not distress.

Using the space available, we decided on this setup using both professional best practices as well as ADA compliant furniture.

The location will be heavily monitored through statistics of key checkouts as well as small surveys required throughout the course when assignments are completed. This is both a chance to present leadership the advantage of this type of space as well as offer a personalized experience in a growing profession.

To combat a few trouble areas, the plan is to allow the librarian more control of how and why the space is used.

A core area is upkeep of equipment and to ensure things are operational during peak times of usage. Working with the teacher, lessons on each piece of equipment will be required assignments throughout the course and will be introduced as the semester/year progresses. This will keep equipment in working condition while also reinforcing the importance of care for the access this space gives to students.

Students’ behavior will be monitored as well since this space is small and assignments require appropriate behavior per the activities presented. A signed document addressing behavior will be required to use this space. Knowing this will be a challenge, it will be re-evaluated throughout the semester to ensure behavior is in line with school standards.

Perhaps most importantly, having this space in the library requires the librarian’s consistency for ensuring each of these areas. Since the issues arise with the setup and monitoring behavior, having an extra staff professional to check in during high traffic times for the library space will be required. The goal is to ensure the space is successful while not taking the librarians valuable time for teaching others within the library.

Who am I?

This project has been overseen by Jon-Marc Dale, a student in IDT 590 as well as the current librarian at Chaminade High School. Jon-Marc has over 10 years’ experience in designing spaces within the library workplace as well as developing improved processes for instruction in using library material. He will be responsible for all aspects of this project and will work to complete each goal to include building the website page per the learning objectives of this assignment for IDT 590.
