Training  Engagement

Jocelyn Ford Idt590 Final
Authors Background

I am a very motivated individual who is always looking to take on new ventures. I enjoy working with youth and children. I know that my purpose in life is to help youth, and work with youth in some way. I graduated from UMSL with a BA in Educational Studies December 2015. I currently work for Special School District as a Para-professional.

I transferred to Fontbonne University January 2017 to begin a new journey in Instructional Design and Technology. I am excited for this new journey. I realize that technology is evolving every day and I want to increase my knowledge so that I will be more useful. My goal is to create training modules and e-learning programs for different institutions and companies. I understand that technology is important and is making things more interesting. I'm glad to finally be a part of the team!!!!!!!!

Overview

The scenario I decided to cover for this project discuss how the current training modules are outdated, and the staff is struggling with being motivated to complete them. My role in this scenario is the Lead Instructional Designer, that oversees implementing different techniques in the program that will add more interest to it. The audience in this scenario may vary. The audience can potentially be members apart of an organization, employees going through training, or teachers that may have a professional development training to complete. My task is to implement different programs and techniques that will motivate the staff more as well as make the trainings more interesting and up to date.

Research

I discovered that there are two main problems that must be addressed in this scenario. Problem #1 is that the training is not interesting and is not effective. Problem #2 is that the audience (employees) are bored and expressing a lack of motivation to complete the trainings. To develop a helpful and effective solution to solve the problems, I decided to research different techniques and methods that will be helpful and effective to both the trainees and its organization. So of course, the first thing that comes to mind when solving the problems would be to update the trainings and send the employees on their way, but the solution goes deeper than that. We don't just want to update the information, but we also want to make the trainings more interactive, exciting, and most of all effective.

According to an article located on administrate.com, employees don't look forward to company training, but they have discovered that gamification, interactive activities, group work, and visuals are all equal components for a successful and engaging training. The goal of this project is to revise the training to be more interesting by incorporating more activities, gamifications games, group work, and visuals. After implementing all the techniques previously listed the training should display a more interactive and technology based demonstration. To provide more detail I will go through each section that will be implemented, and discuss how it will look and how will be effective in this project.

Since the goal of this project is to create a more interactive training I thought that incorporating the use of gamifications will be very useful. Gamifications are application of typical elements of game playing (e.g. point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity. According to the article it explains that this method works well if there is a reward based system in place for the staff. In this project, I will create and use a gamification gaming method that gains the interest of the employees. I will use the necessary content, break it down into section and translate the information into a game that employees will participate in. The key is to have fun while learning new information.

Successful learning is a combination of three elements:

  • 70% from real-life and on-the-job experiences, tasks, and problem solving

  • 20% from feedback and from observing and working with peers and role models

  • 10% from formal training

As we note from this, gamification can provide an effective approach to enhancing learning. This is because these inherent features:

  • It evokes friendly competition.

  • It provides the learners with a sense of achievement.

  • It provides an engaging learner experience leading to anticipated behavior change.

  • It encourages learners to progress through the content, motivate action, and eventually influence behavior.

The gamification will consist of a variety of problem solving, problem solving, peer feedback and scenarios. Adding gamification to the new training will create a better learning experience and environment, as well as provide instant feedback.

The second method that will incorporated in the training is Group Work- Gives the trainees a chance to work amongst the group and gain different perspectives for a better understanding. Listening to an individual go on and on lecturing can be rather boring so working in groups helps the training become more engaging. This will simply display team building skills as well as get the employees to interact with one another and engage with others as well. Examples of group work in the new training are, working through scenarios, partner discussions and verbal problem solving with peers.

Our third method for the new training program would be to incorporate Visual Aids which helps learners with understanding information through images and tools related to the topic. Visual aids involve your audience and require a change from one activity to another: from hearing to seeing. When you use visual aids, their use tends to encourage gestures and movement on your part. This extra movement reinforces the control that you, the speaker, need over the presentation. The use of visual aids, then, are mutually beneficial to the audience and you.
Visual aids add impact and interest to a presentation. They enable you to appeal to more than one sense at the same time, increasing the audience's understanding and retention level. With pictures, the concepts, or ideas you present are no longer simply words but words plus images. Other forms of visual aids are movie clips, DIY video, pictures, handouts etc. We want to monitor the time of the different videos that are incorporated, so that the audience won’t get bored easily.

Our last method to incorporate into our new training is Interactive Activities- According to the article previously mentioned incorporating interactive activities forces individuals to work together. It also helps with engaging the interest of the trainees. Examples of interactive activity would be role play and acting out different problems and solutions to ensure that the information is communicated and learned correctly. Ice breakers would also be a great interactive activity to implement to get everyone familiar and comfortable with one another. Below I will provide a link that will provide more options for interactive activities in a training.

Effective training is performed through effective skills and interesting programs. Julia Bluestone stated in her article entitled, "Effective in-service training and delivery'‘, that using multiple methods to convey information is very helpful with retaining the information and using it in an effective way. Using different methods and techniques will help increase the interest of the learners, it will be more effective, updated, and more engaging. The new training program will have a variety of different methods. Having different learning methods will help the training more engaged and not so boring. This will ensure that all employees will be effective and retain information as well.

Evaluation

To evaluate and test that the methods are working, I will create a post and pre-survey that will be provided to the individuals at the beginning and end of each training session. This survey will ask basic questions such as:

What are you looking to learn from this training?

How enthused are you to complete this training?

The questions listed above will be included in the pre-survey.

How has this training helped you today? And do you think it is helpful for your position?

Rate the level of engagement using a scale ranging from 0-10, 10 being the more effective, 1 being poor training.

What did you enjoy most about the training?

Do you feel today’s training was effective?

Leave comments, questions, or concerns that could help the training, or things you may want to see added to the program.

The question listed above will be those listed on the post survey.

Another way that I will evaluate the progress will be to have the trainees take a short quiz at the end of each module. Each section will have a quiz that employees will take and be graded on. The employees must get an 80% or better to move to the next phase of the training. The quiz will help to see if the employees are understanding the knowledge. If the employee gets any of the questions wrong and struggle to understand the information, they will have an opportunity to send that question to the facilitator for more help and a better explanation. This will help with keeping track of the progress and the effectiveness. My team will be able to see the problem and assist and help instead of leaving the employee to struggle. Lastly, I will have an open discussion at the end of each training to ensure that the information was communicated correctly and effectively. From the evaluations, my team will be able to make the necessary changes to stay on track.
